  • JAMMED UP

    a Debt Goes Bad novella

    ★★★★★

    Loyalty. Betrayal. Injustice.

A rudeboy never forgets. It’s been ten long years and ‘Jam’ has been working his way through a list of men who tormented his best-friend, Jabba. Now there’s only one name left to cross off…

He’s been told it’s an easy lookout job, but he knows something’s not quite right. Knock-off gear and bent coppers have never been his bag. Out of his depth and up against an organised criminal gang, Jam has to learn fast to stay alive. But if there's one thing that keeps him going, it's thoughts of sweet revenge.

If you’re looking for a London gangland parable on loyalty, betrayal and injustice, you’ll love this “slice of Brit grit crime.” Readers are calling it a “really clever story” with intriguing characters and “fast-paced action” that will “keep you on your toes from start to finish.”

    When a debt goes bad...

    ★★★★★

Losing his City job and beautiful wife is starting to feel like the least of Mickey Field's problems. A proposition from his one-time friend, and small-time London gangster Herbert Long, threatens to draw him back into the murky world he’s been desperate to forget. The deal is non-negotiable. It’s pay-back for that little cover-up years ago, from which young Mickey emerged unscathed to climb the corporate ladder. This time, there'll be no easy way out...

He may be an unlikely hero, conflicted and outwitted at every turn, but if you like your heroines strong and manipulative, you're going to love the girl who comes crashing into his life. She knows just how to play him. And if you enjoy being teased by the dark threat of an evil force lurking in the shadows, this “gripping, edge of your seat, psychological thriller” that readers are saying is “expertly written” and “full of twists and turns”, will have you swiping the page to discover the identity of the cold-blooded killer.

  • LET'S GET PHYSICAL!

    Signed, sealed, delivered...

  • so, what's it all about, mickey?

    When a debt goes bad...

An old friend calls in a debt

Michael Field just lost his City job and his beautiful wife in one fell swoop.

Unemployed and down on his luck, he's propositioned by one-time friend, Herbert Long. The job is non-negotiable - pay-back for a cover-up years ago.

But something’s not right; it all seems too easy.

She offers you a scotch and a smile

It’s not just the job that doesn't add up.

Part of him is flattered by the improbable advances of the beautiful young woman who calls herself Grace de Manton, but his inner realist is suspicious. What is her game?

And could she be connected with Herb somehow?

What you gonna do now, Mickey?

He can’t shake the feeling he’s being watched.

Then there's the threatening voice of a stranger down the phone... and that man lurking in the shadows.

In this complex criminal web, Mickey doesn’t know who to protect and who to fear.

...someone's looking to make a killing

...someone's looking to make a killing.

But with even those closest to him seemingly involved, who can he trust? A hapless pawn in a bigger game that's playing out between local crime lords, all he knows is whatever happens...

... he’s not going back into that bloody chamber.

  • INTRODUCING STEVEN HAYWARD

Steven is a financial crime consultant based in London, who decided some time ago that his dream was to write fiction.

After a happy childhood, growing up on the Hamworthy peninsula of the beautiful Poole Harbour in the county of Dorset, he progressed from the local grammar school to an international bank, then based in Poole, with the promise of travel and high finance. Alas, it was to be another fourteen years before he would make his first overseas business trip… to Jersey in the Channel Islands! But in the years that followed, working for several City institutions, he travelled far and wide, managing relationships with large institutional clients, before settling into the compliance role of Money Laundering Reporting Officer. In recent years he's divided his time between his love of writing and consulting on financial crime.

His debut novel, Mickey Take, features an ex-banker who throws in the towel on his "big" City job, but that's where the similarity ends. Between writing crime thrillers and fundraising for New Ways (www.newways.org.uk), Steven ventures back periodically to work in the City. In contrast, Michael Field, the protagonist and primary narrator of Mickey Take, is perhaps less likely to resume his career in financial services anytime soon!

In May 2016, Steven released his second book in the Debt Goes Bad series, a novella called Jammed Up, in which a familiar cast test the moral fibre of two new central characters in a story of loyalty, betrayal and injustice.

Steven lives in Kent, England with his wife Helen and their beagle Ella.
